Our Littles

The children in our program come from a variety of different backgrounds, and once they're enrolled, they are simply known as our 'Littles'. We accept children beginning at age five through teenage foster children who are matched through age 21. The children who are part of Big Brothers Big Sisters truly want a mentor and are excited to meet their Big Brother or Big Sister!

Teachers often refer children who have disciplinary problems, truancy issues, or minor infractions. Studies show children who have an incarcerated parent are 70% more likely to follow in their parents' footsteps. A mentor can often help reverse that trend.

Some of our children have witnessed or been victims of domestic violence or have been affected/infected by HIV or AIDS. We provide additional training for volunteers who have the desire and compassion to work with that special population.

We have more than 600 children still waiting for a mentor; most are minority boys who have been waiting for more than a year.  For many volunteers, being matched with a child who may be from a different ethnic or cultural group is an opportunity to learn something new. In some cases, we will consider matching a young Little Brother with a Big Sister. Big Couples (married couples) can also mentor a child together, which gives the Little a chance to see a positive and healthy relationship. During your interview we will ask you questions so we might find a Little who will be a good 'match' for you. If you're interested in volunteering or if you'd like to sign up your child, 813.287.2210.
