Winter Haven vs. Dade City--the Race is On!

Winter Haven Mayor JP Powell has challenged Dade City Mayor Scott Black to see which city can recruit the most mentors for local youth by June 30th. At stake is local pride—and produce. Mayor Powell of Winter Haven has promised to send oranges if Dade City wins the challenge. Mayor Black of Dade City has promised to deliver kumquats if defeated. But there really is no loser, because either way, more kids in both Winter Haven and Dade City will get the guidance and support they need to be more successful in school and in life.

OPERATION BIGS!

We're calling on the community to help us enroll 100 volunteers and children in our new mentoring program for children in military families: Operation Bigs.

Volunteering to mentor the child of a military family is the perfect way to give back to the people in our community who sacrifice so much for every one of us.

And enrolling your child in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program provides your entire family, and especially your child, with an extra measure of support to help deal with the stresses of military life.

Mentorship isn't about parenting. It's about providing kids with another trusted adult in their lives--someone to provide guidance and while also having fun.

Interested volunteers can click here to apply now or find out more about volunteering for our new Military Mentoring Program.

Start Something by volunteering. We're looking for committed and dedicated men, women and couples who want to make a difference in the life of a child (Little). Volunteers (Bigs) spend a few hours a month doing simple things with their Little: going to the library, enjoying a ball game, or just hanging out and we encourage Bigs to stay matched at least for one year. For more information call (813) 769-3630 or e-mail tampabay.info@bbbsfl.org

Start Something by making a donation. Your donation will allow us to serve more children by pairing them with a trained and screened mentor. Your gift is tax-deductible--and your company may match your gift, too. Cick here for more information.

Start Something by becoming an advocate. Share the story of Big Brothers Big Sisters with others and encourage them to Start Something too!

Teaching a Child to Fish...

Big Brother Mike took his Little Brother Aikeem out fishing and while these huge fish certainly earn them bragging rights, the pair was even more proud to report that Aikeem brought a great report card home--"As and Bs, with just one C!"
